Jooney Woodward

I recently discovered the work of Jooney Woodward. Jooney graduated from the same college as me; Camberwell College of Art in 2001. She had since had numerous shows including a solo show at MOMA in Wales. She also recently won the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery.

Jooney’s inspiration is derived from travelling round Wales. She explores the towns that tourists often bypass. Within them she looks for authenticity and modest beauty in the overlooked. Her photographs evoke interest in local traditions and activities happening today in the modern British countryside. I think my favourite of her images are those that include the heavy black clouds, just about to break. They are imminent of impending disaster but also speak of escaping and getting out just before everything combusts.
